The Great Eviction: Taking the Keys Back from the Uninvited

Hello, my dearest Adventurers!

Welcome to Mental Health Awareness Month and the anniversary month of the official launch of A Mindful Adventure! Tomorrow, May 7th, marks one year since our very first blog post. I am beyond grateful to have brought all of you on this journey all the way around the sun. Whether you’ve been here since Day 1, are just joining the Tribe, or are currently bingeing past posts and videos—I am proud of you. This work isn’t for the faint of heart; it takes a strong, dedicated soul to do this kind of heavy lifting. Continue to be kind, loving, and compassionate with yourselves as we raise the collective frequency, one mind at a time.

As we dive into this month’s topic, we find ourselves firmly in the frequency of our Sanctuary and open to our manifestations. But that doesn’t mean the work is over. To be honest, that work is never truly done as long as we’re breathing. The act of living is the work. Our life is the spiritual gym for our soul’s individual development. When we are in tune with ourselves, we realize that our trials and struggles are really there to teach us difficult, necessary lessons.

However, these experiences often leave "residue" in our minds, causing them to cloud with other people’s thoughts, opinions, or beliefs. We are constantly in an energetic exchange with everyone around us—on our screens, in our environments, and across the planet. It’s understandable, then, that we would find “Squatters” in the Sanctuary we’ve worked so hard to build. Those limiting stories, fears, and negative self-talk were taught to us through experiences with the media, our families, and our communities.

It’s time to evict these thoughts. All they do is tell lies, keep you small, and keep you disconnected from your own power. Around here, we live to be Sovereign. We have our own backs, and we step up to handle anything blocking us from the life we deserve. This month, we are going to identify the “Squatters,” understand why they need to hit the road, make a plan to evict them, and learn how to permanently cleanse the mind.

This is for you if you’re tired of tolerating the things holding you back. This is for you if you’re ready to fight back and level up your life. Grab your favorite beverage, find a comfy seat, and prepare your notes—because my inner dragon is coming out in this post.

Internal Audit: Identifying the Squatters

To reclaim your territory, you must first learn how to distinguish your own Sovereign Voice from the noise of the "Squatters." A quick rule of thumb: If the voice is your own intuition, your guides, or the Creator, it belongs in the Sanctuary. If it is anything else, it is a Squatter.

While that sounds simple, these uninvited guests are masters of disguise. To help you make sense of the crowd, here are the most common Squatter Profiles:

  • The Ancestral Echo: These are the fears, limiting beliefs, and traumas passed down through generations. They are the rules and regulations that brought your family to its current state. You recognize them by phrases like, "Money is hard to come by," "This family has always struggled with…" or "People like us don’t…" These beliefs were baked into your psyche during your most formative years, often before you had the power to question them.
  • The Social Script: This is the pressure we absorb from media, coworkers, and community. It’s the "Social Script" that dictates you must be married, wildly successful, and have your entire retirement figured out while you're still young—or else you’re a "washed-up loser." This squatter preys on our biological need to fit in and belong.
  • The Ghost of Failures Past: This is your ego’s highlight reel of every mistake, embarrassment, and negative experience you’ve ever had. Its only goal is to keep you small and "safe" within your comfort zone, terrified of any outcome—even a favorable one.

While we could subcategorize these forever, you will find the nuances during your own journaling and self-intimacy work. Many of these voices have been on repeat for so long that they’ve begun to sound like your own.

This is why we must cross-examine every thought that crosses our minds. No one gets a free pass. Ask yourself: “Who said that, and why?” The first part of the question—Who?—is meant to identify the mouth the voice came from. Even if the voice mimics your own tone, you move immediately to the second, more powerful part of the interrogation: Why? You must peel back the layers of the "Why" for every single thought. If a thought tells you that you can't succeed, ask why. If it tells you that you're "behind," ask why. If you cannot find a "Why" that is rooted in your current truth, your sovereign power, and your divine worth, then that voice is a liar. Digging for the "Why" exposes the root. Once you realize the root is irrational, or that it belongs to someone else's story, you've taken the first step toward letting it go. Identification is the beginning of the eviction.

The High Cost of Rent-Free Living

Each of these negative thought patterns is a leak in your "Afterglow." They drain your battery before you even have a chance to move toward your goals. This is why it is incredibly important to perform internal audits and check the inner workings of your mind. From this perspective, you are empowered to observe all the thoughts, feelings, and words that flow in and out of you. This is how we perform mental check-ins and keep a “handle” on our minds.

It may seem daunting, and as a former chronic thinker myself, I can attest to the difficulty. I used to have racing, uncontrollable thoughts that never paused except when I was asleep. Regardless of who you are, humans average hundreds of thousands of thoughts each day—and that doesn’t even include the automatic functions like your cardiovascular, digestive, and nervous systems that keep you alive without conscious effort.

The point of taking note of these mental "passers-by" is to gauge your internal levels. What kind of thoughts are you having? Are they self-deprecating? Do they build you up? Are they rooted in fear? Creating categories for these thoughts is like assigning them meaning; it helps the brain differentiate and makes the job of brain-monitoring manageable. Think of it as sorting and arranging your thoughts into bins.

Personally, I like to imagine each bin sitting under a basketball hoop while I shoot free throws with my thoughts, landing them in the correct basket. It makes the process fun for me. You could simply observe the thoughts as they arise, speak the name of the "bin" they belong to, and allow yourself to move on to the next one without getting caught up.

It looks like this:

  • You think: “I’m such a loser.” You say: “Childhood Trauma.”
  • You think: “I’m not where I should be by now.” You say: “Social Script.”

Get intimate with the types of thoughts you have. Learn to categorize them so they work for you and your growth journey rather than against it.

This is one of the most perpetual portions of self-development—it never truly ends. Each time I think I’ve addressed all the thoughts plaguing me, a memory from 5th grade taps me on the shoulder to remind me it’s still around. Living with this level of negativity will keep you stuck in the same cycles and lessons over and over again. But each time you decide to stand up to those voices, you prove to yourself that you can be trusted. You prove that you have your own best interests at heart.

These thoughts are a part of you on a psychological level, but the beauty of sovereignty is that you can cut them out. You can decide to adopt new thoughts that uplift and inspire you. When you identify with the “Squatters,” you become the very thing that is tearing you down. But when you choose to push back and evict them from your Sanctuary, you are inherently choosing yourself.

Serving the Eviction Notice

Instead of getting "all in your feels" or trying to reason your way around a negative thought, you need to tell it plainly: You are not welcome here. Remember those bins from the last section? When I identify an unwelcome thought, I don’t just place it there—I slam dunk it into the trash, smashing the backboard every time. It feels good to kick out unwanted thoughts. There is no right or wrong way to visualize this; they are thoughts, not beings. You might prefer imagining them blowing up, or perhaps abandoning them on the side of the road. Whatever your method, make it as clear as possible. This announces to the mind that these are unwanted energies. Eventually, simply thinking those thoughts becomes revolting. It is possible to release what is holding you back; you just need to train yourself to recognize what is "foul" to your personal growth.

This is achieved through a Mental “Hard Reset” to clear out the old defaults. While there are many ways to do this, the most practical is to get crystal clear on your “Why.” * Why are you trying to evolve?

  • Why are you so motivated toward self-development?

My Why is so that I can show up fully as myself in all of my relationships. I want my future family to have the best version of me. I want to soften into my power and be the example of what it means to be who you are in all moments of life. I want my future children, spouse, and pets to see my most authentic self 100% of the time. It has taken me years to remove the masks I adopted along the way, and I owe it to myself—and to them—to be true. This reminds me that besides coming home to myself (which is always the priority), I have people who depend on me.

To do this, you must have boundaries with yourself. “No” is a full sentence, even when spoken internally. When you tell a thought “No” or slam dunk it into the trash, you are declaring: “We no longer tolerate this way of thinking.” I recommend a 21-day reset to achieve this, as it takes approximately three weeks to rewrite your neurocircuitry and form a new habit. Of course, a complete mindset shift takes more than just one habit, but you can start by stopping self-deprecating thoughts the moment they arise. Silence the voices that say: “I’m not enough,” “I’m too much,” “I always fail,” or “I’m not wanted.” Anything that makes you feel small must go.

And for an added twist: Stop speaking ill of others. Your brain registers gossip as if you are talking about yourself. There is nothing wrong with venting or self-expression, but gossiping is a leak in your power. Stay true to yourself and speak your truth, but don’t badmouth others—it simply isn’t worth your precious energy.

Real-Time Maintenance: Chunking the Audit

Multiple times each day, you need to get intimate with yourself and ask: “What kinds of thoughts have been swirling around in my head since the last time I checked in?” The goal here is to "chunk" your observations throughout the day instead of trying to remember every single mental transaction at the end of the night. This approach leads to a much higher success rate because it allows you to pinpoint the exact occurrence or trigger that invited a specific thought in the first place. This is how you unmask the "Squatter’s" origin in real-time. Staying conscious and up-to-date with your internal dialogue is the absolute best way to block new intruders and evict persistent ones.

But what happens when you feel like you’ve missed a Squatter? You simply take a moment to return to your “Why.” Remember that the silence of a mind working for you can now be filled with your Muse instead. All the newly empty rooms and cleared spaces in your mind are now available for positive thoughts and a focus on your deepest motivations. It is vital to realize that empty space will eventually be filled with something; the Sovereign choice is deciding exactly what that "something" is.

Conclusion: The Sovereign Decree

You are the ultimate protector and the final authority of your Sanctuary—your Heaven on Earth. Every choice you make in this work is the correct one, so do not allow yourself to overthink the process. You are designed to grow and develop in ways that are unique to you; no one else can dictate this journey for you.

Everything you will ever need or desire is already held within yourself. You have the power, the vision, and now, the tools. So, change the locks. Get firm in your resolve. Commit to your own evolution with the ferocity of a dragon guarding its treasure. The Sanctuary is yours, and the Squatters have officially been served.

Weekly Prompt: Identify one specific thought-pattern that has been living in your mind rent-free. What does the 'Eviction Notice' look like? Write down what you are replacing that space with.

Navigating the unknown is the ultimate act of trust, but navigating it with a calibrated inner compass is an act of Power. Recent portals have stripped away my old scripts, leaving me standing firmly at the helm of my own ship. My growth—this profound, "thunder-filled" journey of reclamation—is the heartbeat of A Mindful Adventure. As I continue to speak my truth, and the truth of the Earth as fact, I am inviting you to move beyond the "scraps" and join me in the deep work of sovereignty. This journey is my life's work, and it is a path I am honored to share with those ready to lock eyes with their own destiny.
