Hello, my dearest Adventurers!
This month is my birthday month, and to celebrate, we're doing something a little different. We're going to talk about some life lessons from the movies I've been watching on repeat for the past few months. To kick things off, we're diving into the joyful world of Mamma Mia!
I recently watched this movie by myself for the first time and got to really analyze it, and let’s just say the franchise just gained a new fan. This movie explores finding one's path, understanding one's purpose, and fully embodying an authentic life. It’s an inspiration and an expression of following the calling of your deepest desires, taking your shot when it aligns, and following through.
This post will contain spoilers for the movie! If you haven’t seen it and don’t want it spoiled, go watch it now and then come back. Otherwise, get ready to find some powerful lessons in all the music and dancing!
Lesson 1: The Journey is the Point
Sophie begins her journey convinced that finding her father is the missing piece of her life. She assumes she'll instinctively know who he is and that everything will fall into place as soon as she meets him. So she invites the three men from her mother’s past to her wedding, not realizing the can of worms she's about to open.
Sophie goes through the long and messy ordeal of trying to bond with Sam, Harry, and Bill, only to realize that the wedding itself isn't what she truly wants. She realizes that her relationship with her fiancé, Sky, and the journey to discover herself are far more important than a single event. She calls off the wedding to travel the world with Sky, recognizing that the adventure of living is more profound than any single destination.
Her mother, Donna, had a similarly messy journey. After becoming pregnant with Sophie, she was ostracized by her family and had to figure out life all on her own. She poured all her energy into creating a life for herself and her daughter, carving out a beautiful little piece of Greece that she could call her own. She realized that her path, though filled with challenges, was exactly what it needed to be.
Both mother and daughter followed their intuition, even when the path was messy. It set them on the course for the rest of their lives, allowing them to do what they truly desired deep down. The journey of life is often messy, but that doesn’t mean you give up. Sometimes all you need is a new perspective.
Lesson 2: Your Worth Isn’t Something You Have to Earn
As we just talked about, Sophie initially ties her self-worth to finding her biological father. She gets so caught up in the process that she misses the beauty of the journey. What she doesn’t realize is that all three men—Sam, Harry, and Bill—are already providing her with unconditional love and support.
Even as they try to figure out their own place in the story, they bond with her, offer her their guidance, and teach her a bit about her mother's past. Their genuine care and affection make her final decision even more difficult, as she struggles to choose just one.
In the end, she realizes that this entire endeavor was not what needed to happen. She had worth within herself all along. Sky plays a major role in her recognizing this on the morning of the wedding, when he tells her he took a break from traveling the world to find himself in order to be with her. She recognizes that she already had everything she needed to feel whole and complete within herself.
Lesson 3: Your Story Doesn’t Define Your Future
When the three men suddenly re-enter Donna’s life, she feels personally attacked by the Heavens. She’s convinced she must get rid of the "problem," even though one of them, Sam, was the love of her life. He had actually hoped to reconcile with her on this journey. She was so focused on escaping her past that she couldn't see the beautiful irony in front of her—she had manifested the very thing she was singing for in "Money, Money, Money," and she didn't even realize it!
Donna finally comes to terms with her past when her daughter admits to inviting all three men. In that moment, she sees that Sophie accepts her messy, unconventional story. By being open and vulnerable, Donna finds more peace, joy, and satisfaction than keeping it all wrapped up and hidden. The truth ultimately sets her free, giving her the happily ever after she was meant to have.
Lesson 4: The Power of Your Tribe
Donna didn’t go through her turmoil alone, and you don’t have to either. Her best friends, Rosie and Tanya, are the unwavering force who helped her every step of the way. The Dynamos are her soul tribe, her besties for resties—a group of friends unafraid to speak their minds and do what they feel is best for each other. They were there to guide, support, and believe in her when she felt like she couldn’t.
The power of a soul tribe is unmistakable. While loving yourself is 10,000% required and necessary for a fulfilling life, being surrounded by people who love and cherish you is a profound boost. The people you surround yourself with have the ability to uplift and protect you when you are unable to do so for yourself. It’s part of human nature to desire to belong, and finding your own tribe is a crucial step toward a satisfying life.
If you are looking for your tribe, just know that they will come. As you learn to love and support yourself, you will become more aware of the qualities you appreciate in others, and in time, you will find your people.
Conclusion: A Life Filled With Song & Authenticity
Life, much like Mamma Mia!, is a bit messy, filled with unexpected twists and turns. But as we've learned, those are the moments where the true adventure lies. By embracing your journey, accepting that your worth is a birthright, and leaning into your tribe, you can live your story without a script. You have everything you need to be the star of your own life, so go ahead and make it an adventure filled with confidence, compassion, and a lot of beautiful music.
